Shooting in one window of light

Behind the scenes1 min readOlivia Parker

Most of my favourite images happen in the last twenty minutes before sunset. Here’s how we plan a session around it.

Find the time

I check the sunset time for your date and location, then plan the session to end right as the light disappears.

Start early

We begin about an hour before, with details and quieter portraits, so we’re warmed up when the best light arrives.

Shoot into the sun

Backlight gives that glow around your hair and shoulders. I’ll position you so your face stays soft and even.

Have a plan B

Clouds happen. Overcast light is soft and flattering, and stormy skies can be even more dramatic.
